In addition to planning your meals, there are many simple ideas to help achieve and maintain your ideal weight. One of them (tip #7) is to begin cutting back on your consumption of red meat. You’ve no doubt heard about this for years now, so if you haven’t already done so, it’s time to wean yourself to a certain degree. Personally, I love red meat, but I enjoy it even more when I don’t have it all the time, and I’m much healthier too.

Another tip (#6 to be precise) for helping you to permanently get rid of your excess fat is to plan your meals ahead of time. If you are hungry but have no food or the food that you do have is frozen solid, then you will be much more tempted to go grab something quickly, which is usually not good for you. Plus, it’s just plain frustrating not having something to eat or not having any idea of what to make when you’re hungry. That type of repeated stress can lead to failure in a relatively short amount of time. Instead, you want to design quality into your new lifestyle and give yourself the highest possible chance of success.

Get ready, get set, EAT! I’m talking about before you go grocery shopping, by the way. So don’t go to the store hungry or with a craving for anything. It’s a surefire way to buy too much and skimp on the quality of what you buy at the same time. If you are not involved in the grocery shopping in your household, it’s time to saddle up. Offer to take charge of that chore altogether or at the very least become actively involved in the process.
As my girlfriend will readily attest, I like her version of shopping about as much as I enjoy having dental work done. Going to the mall or perusing stores with no specific item in mind to purchase beforehand drives me bonkers. It’s not that I’m cheap (although admittedly there may be the slightest bit of truth to that); it’s just that I loathe the act of shopping. When I go, I’m in quick and out quick with one notable exception - food.

If you read and accomplish the objectives in Part II, you will weigh yourself, calculate your BMI, track your existing caloric intake for a couple of typical days, use the Mayo’s calorie calculator to identify your typical caloric needs and determine what your current percentage of saturated fat and total fat is to your overall caloric intake. Whew! You even get some exercise credit for all that work. From here on out, it gets easier…sort of.
My second tip to help you to make a lifestyle change, be healthier, live longer and lose weight is to try not to eat out more than once per week. This can be a big change for many of you, even a shock, but remember what I said at the beginning of this series about finding a new comfort zone. Trust me, once all of the changes are over, you’ll settle right back in AND lose weight. Restaurants in general are like land mines – where you’re going seems like a great idea right up until the explosion, only with food it’s an explosion in your waist size instead of beneath your feet.

Losing weight for good by making a lifestyle change will be challenging at first, simply because I’m going to take you out of your comfort zone. By nature, human beings don’t often like to be made uncomfortable, even if it’s for their own good. On the flip side however, change is good and inevitable. After all, if not for change, we would not exist, nor would any plant or animal. Adaptability is the name of the game if you want to survive and for sure if you want to thrive.
