Each passing day we learn more and more about why people get fat and why many people stay fat. It is a frustrating situation for everyone as obesity has quite literally turned into an epidemic in the United States. If you are not fat, you almost certainly know someone closely who is.
Being overweight is a major contributor to cardiovascular disease, several types of cancer, diabetes and more. That probably isn’t shocking to anyone, as we have known this for quite some time. What is shocking is that so many people truly believe that certain individuals (perhaps even themselves) are going to be fat no matter what they do. Bologna.

Getting sick by catching a cold or flu virus isn’t exactly what most people look forward to every year. What if I told you that you might be able to prevent some of those illnesses? Since there is no cure for the common cold or flu, the only effective means we have of combating them is to prevent them in the first place.
Even if you could only prevent just one of the colds that you get every year, wouldn’t it be worth it? Imagine no sneezing, coughing, sore throat, vomiting, aching or misery at all for that 1-2 week stretch. Best of all, this is possible without the use of drugs or supplements of any kind, although an annual flu vaccine is something you should consider.

People have asked me countless times what I actually eat. Often they answer before I can say anything, as if trying to guess. I’ve heard everything from grass to tree bark before the person stops to wait eagerly for my response, as if there were truly any chance that I might actually agree.
Well, the fact of the matter is that I eat lots of things to stay healthy, but grass and tree bark aren’t two of them. I suppose grass might not be too bad in a soup or salad, but with my luck I’d show up to pick some about 5 minutes after a dog came by to mark his territory. I do however try to follow my own advice and eat regularly from my list of the top 25 superfoods that I wrote about in September. These are phenomenal foods to incorporate into your day, but variety is important too, so I move around a lot.

I’m not at all opposed to playing jokes, but I’m actually serious here! Flossing your teeth – all of them – on a daily basis can actually help prevent heart disease. I know what you’re thinking, but I’m not making this up folks. Dental floss is wicked stuff; MacGyver could do all sorts of crazy things with it. Many of you may have already heard these reports, but for those of you that haven’t, just sit back and enjoy the ride.
Numerous studies have come to the same conclusion over the last few years: there is growing evidence that periodontal disease actually does contribute to heart disease. Apparently the nasty little bugs that cause your gums to bleed, swell and otherwise deteriorate also like to inflame your arteries (atherosclerosis). It all goes downhill from there of course.
The good news is that now you can tell your kids with a straight face to floss or they could be in big trouble. No more making stuff up with “if/then” statements. But of course the best thing to do is lead by example, so pick your favorite dental floss and get to work! Incidentally, if you can’t floss for whatever reason, they say to at least use disinfecting mouthwash, but only as a second option.
So if flossing prevents heart disease, then what kind of weird habits prevent cancer? That’s what I want to know! Maybe it’s cracking your knuckles. If so, I’m all set because that’s one habit I’ve downright mastered. Of course, I’ll be writhing in pain from arthritis instead, but hey, you can’t have everything…

As I mentioned previously, included in this post is a summary of my 15-tip series on how to lose weight forever. This enables you to view them all in just one location; for greater detail, you can always revisit the original articles. I would suggest printing the summary and re-reading individual articles as often as necessary.
I know that I’ve said this a lot since I first began Tips4BetterHealth.com just two months ago, but I’m going to bash diets at least one more time. Please don’t look at anything I’ve written as endorsing or promoting a diet of any kind. It’s just the opposite, actually. They set you up for failure folks – you have got to think in terms of a lifestyle choice instead. This means that you are changing your life and habits permanently, not just until you lose 20 or even 200 pounds. You will be amazed at the difference this makes, both from a physical and from a mental standpoint.
